Grateful For...

A new spindle!

I asked Tom and Linda Diak of Grafton Fibers for a Kingwood spindle with a turned shaft - this is what I commonly refer to as a "TomNLinda" (I being the proud and, as far as I know, sole owner of a couple of these wonders! I won't taunt you with a "nyah-nyah!")

I don't think it was three days after I asked for it that it showed up on my doorstop, brand spankin' new! How's that for service? Thanks, guys! She's a beauty!

A gorgeous pinky-bluey-gray summer evening sky tonight:

Fireflies. Do you know how hard it is to photograph fireflies? There must be hundreds in our garden, meadow, and woods... but despite taking several photos, all I could capture were two... and they don't look nearly as beautiful as in real life!

It was that magical time of dusk when the neighborhood suddenly goes quiet except for the calls of birds and the sound of the wind rustling the birch leaves. Suddenly, little green "pixies" appeared and led me down the path between the meadow and woods. When I tried to photograph them, they all stopped glowing, as if not wanting to be captured on film. I'd lower my camera, and suddenly they were dancing in the tall grass and tree leaves...

I believe in fairies... do you?

Audrey Hepburn. There are very few situations in life that can't be handled by asking yourself, "What would Audrey do?"

She was kind, she was classic, she was graceful, funny, and real. Her sense of glamour is attainable by any woman with a black turtleneck, black leggings, and black ballet flats... but her charm was all her own.

I'm enjoying a book about her style, as experienced by her friends and those who designed clothing for her.

Yarn Store Sale!

Ruhama's Yarn & Needlepoint had a sale today... I stocked up on Koigu and Berroco. Guess I like purple?

I'd seen this sparkly, holographic-type yarn previously and kicked myself afterwards for not grabbing it, despite having no idea what to make with it. Today, I found a periwinkly-purple wool/mohair yarn that matches the iridescent lights in it perfectly... I'm thinking Sugar Plum Fairy mittens, with sparkly, fluffy cuffs... and maybe a hat to match?

The yarns are Austerman's Vegas and Brown Sheep's Lamb's Pride Worsted.

A Lucky Find. Because of inherited peripheral neuropathy, Jeff may not always be able to play music. Although we'd intended to purchase a harpsichord "later in life," we decided not to put it off any longer. Jeff found this beauty in Boston, and it should be here before September.

More than anything today, I am grateful that we are able to get this now, before Jeff's condition progresses any further. And hopefully, now that he's seeing a great doctor, it won't!

(Note: this is not an original, historic instrument! We're not that lucky!)

Fibery Stuff

I'm scared to cast on the Creatures Of The Reef shawl. Silly, I know, especially with the ReefShawlKnitAlong Yahoo! Group for support. I just need some time to focus, and these past days have been hectic. I don't want to mess it up first thing, and become frustrated... so I will wait until my head clears a bit and keep working on the Artisan NZ Merino lace scarf instead.

I really want to cast on for those purple, sparkly mittens, but I'm committed to at least five rows of the shawl by Wednesday, so I'd better get to it!

My wish for you today is that you will be as lucky, fortunate, and blessed as I feel I have. I wish that for everyone.

Oh, and Jeff's grandfather got married today... may they have many happy years together, and as much joy as Jeff and I have had these past ten years.

Valentine and Jeff are pleased with the new socks.
Valentine does not hunt. Jeff is not trying out for "The Sound Of Music."

This project has taken me... I don't even want to remember how long. More than a year? Yikes - socks should take me a week, tops!

Jeff wanted some socks to keep his feet warm while hunting - something hard to accomplish. First, he has peripheral neuropathy, which means his circulation is really poor and his feet are cold to begin with. Second, Jeff actually likes to sit in a tree... in the freezing cold... and meditate... and get to see deer, more than actually hunt, so it's important that he keep his feet warm, as he doesn't move around much.

So... Jeff wanted these socks, but then he decided he wanted them made from fibers native to North America ("for luck," for some reason. Men!)

We came up with Qiviut, since it's so warm (many times warmer than wool); Bison down, since it is also very warm and was kind of cool to use; and Navajo-Churro wool, to be used as sort of a base. Somehow that struck a chord with the "Dances With Wolves" aesthetic he was going for. Men!

I spindle-spun the qiviut, and then wheel-spun the bison and N-C wool - each into a singles yarn. Then I plied all three together.

Close-up of socks.

I knit the socks from the toe-up, using my "gauge-less" method, making them up as I went along.

I'm so glad they are finished and that Jeff likes them! Do you know how boring it is to knit this much brown? Jeff's feet are size 12, extra wide!

Now, a day of rest, and then Wednesday is the big day to start... The Shawl!

What did I learn from this project?

  • Don't let a non-spinner choose the fibers for the job at hand. If you're going to be working on it, you'd better like the color!
  • Card the fibers all together first, for the best distribution (to make the most of more expensive fibers), and for faster spinning and plying.
  • Don't be so afraid that the recipient won't like something that you put off finishing it and it gets to be a drag.
  • Don't finish hunting socks in the middle of July.

To top it off, my orchid is now blooming:

May your day be as successful as mine and my orchid's!

Please put a message in the Tag-Board to the right and let me know you stopped by, and what YOU'RE working on!
