Thanksgiving Season
The sun is lower in the sky and the temperature is chilly... can snow be far behind? Still blooming, my hibiscus plant raises a flower's face to sunlight that reminds one of winter in Scandinavia:
Fiberarts
I'm working on a rose, top-down, turtleneck raglan sweater in Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran (from WEBS - good pricing!) I'm making it up as I go, using "Knitting From The Top" for general guidelines. Fiona energetically models it here:
My increases look kind of holey, but hopefully they'll "settle in" when this is washed.
The Peace Fleece Everyday Cardigan in "Zarya Fog" is blocking on the board I got from JoAnn's (if you subscribe to their e-mails, they will send you a 50% off coupon about once a month - good for something like this, or for an Ott-Lite!)
I just realized today that I could put the board up vertically - now that is definitely better (and safer) than blocking on a bed!
Miss Kary now sells Peace Fleece yarn, so I have a great resources for future purchases! I really like this yarn - it reminds me of my handspun (only much, much nicer!) IT isn't over-processed, it's durable, the colors are great, and there's still a "sense of the sheep" in it. If I had found this a while back, I might not have taken up spinning!
Weeding Things Out and Beginning Things Again
It is amazing, the stuff that one accumulates from moves - mostly those of relatives who have cleaned out their own houses and are too discombobulated to make any more decisions about what should be kept, given away, or tossed.
In an effort to redistribute the "wealth" that has somehow accumulated in my own house over the years, I am attempting to e-Bay some items. Know anyone interested in Snowbabies or Norman Rockwell collector's plates? Me either... but maybe someone, somewhere, wants them!
Spindles, though, are another matter... yep, I am working on some new ones now! They'll be e-Bay-ed in the coming weeks, just in time for the holidays. o<[]:-)>
To Quote...
This poem appeared in the December, 2004 issue of "Spirituality & Health" (there's an article on prayer shawl knitting in this issue, too, with a pattern!) It reminded me of the importance of organ donation - is your card signed?
"When I Heard the Transplant Surgeon Speak of Harvesting a Heart"
by Ted Kooser
I suppose it's a little like digging potatoes,
forking aside the packed soil of the body,
snapping the roots of the ribs and lifting it out.
You'd weigh it and turn it in your dirty
fingers, thumbing away the red mud.
But no one will want my Iowa potato,
gone soft in spots, left too long in the acid dirt
of regret. And who would shell the old beans
of these kidneys or want any part of this liver,
a tough mushroom on the side of a stump?
But sometimes we speak of the field of vision,
and maybe somebody might go there
and pull up these two watery onions, my eyes,
still useful after a life of reading, clear and keen
from sixty years of peering into darkness.
I don't want to hear that you might need an organ transplant so please, in the coming holi-days, would you use your good judgement and enjoy festive drinks responsibily? You are important to me and I'm thankful that you're here!
Happy Thanksgiving!
