Daily Dose

Gratitudes of the day:

  • Had the spur-of-the-moment privilege of buying a soldier lunch and shaking his hand. His gratitude to us brought tears of humility to my eyes... it was lunch, for goodness' sake; he's willing to sacrifice his life for us. Jeff said that, from the looks of his uniform, he was a reservist, and a doctor. Very nice young guy. I was grateful Jeff and I acted on our mutual impulse and weren't prevented from doing so by shyness.

  • Wild black raspberries are ripe. We've lots of canes in our wood and all corners of the yard. Fiona (whippet) scratched to go out - not for the usual reason, but to pluck berries - Jeff had given her some earlier in the day, so she knew there were more out there! Went out with her and gathered some for the other dogs and the rats, who loved them. They are delicious when warm from the sun.

  • Took an evening walk on the mowed path around our meadow, and stopped when I heard a noise next to me in the woods. Turns out it was a sweet pink-toed opossum who'd been eating fallen mulberries. Got to watch him for quite some time as he ambled slowly into deeper cover. Glad he's enjoying the bounty, and that he wasn't too afraid of me so that I was able to really study him (and his cute pink paw pads!)

  • New bluebird eggs. A catbird nest.

  • The tall grass has gone to seed, and when the sun is slanting down in the late afternoon, it lights the stalks from behind and makes the field look like a ripping lake of gold.

  • Twilight time, with fireflies darting amongst the small green apples on the trees in the orchard. There is nothing so beautifully bittersweet as a greeny-gold Wisconsin summer twilight after the Fourth of July.

  • Having a new idea for a knit (i)PodPocket - an envelope-type design that will allow easier access to the screen and wheel, yet which will still protect them in transit. More later on that... still brewing.

  • One and one-half measures of 1800 Reposado tequila, one-half measure of Cointreau, and the juice of one just-squeezed lime, shaken with ice until chilled, strained, and sipped slowly while watching the sun go down over the blue spruces and white pines. Sitting still and just being in the moment.

  • Enjoying a halfway-decent movie - "Stigmata" with Gabriel Byrne and Patricia Arquette. The filmwork was gorgeous and the acting and writing so much better than what's usually available these days... The "message" resonated with me as well (the Divine [whatever that means to each of us] is within us, not in a building or organization.) The use of the color red in the mostly blue-toned scenes was striking. Beautiful in an edgy way. (Quite a treat after having to turn off "Legally Blonde II" after being subjected to just three lines of its inane dialogue last night. Blech. I have become convinced that one's IQ is reduced by one point for each of the cable TV stations one watches on a regular basis.)
