An Abundance Of Long-Stemmed American Beauties!

Preamble: I must justify the bounty below by telling you, gentle and nonjudgmental reader, that these were not purchased all at once, and I did give away a bunch of unused spindles this month! With that disclaimer in mind, come enjoy my new booty with me!

I had a happy mail day today - my order of American woods spindles arrived from Journey Wheels!

Bosworth
Maxi in Oak, Midi in Cherry,
and Featherweight in Red Cedar

Thanks, Jonathan and Sheila - they're just what I'd imagined!

Sheila even included a little tag with the source of the "test fibers" - these are from Bountiful.

This set of spindles seems appropriate for spindling on Independence Day:

  • They're all made of American domestic woods;

  • Journey Wheels is based in Massachusetts, one of the original 13 colonies;

  • the design is (as I believe Rosemary T. once said) almost Shaker-like in its simplicity;

  • even the little tags that come on "Bossie" spindles have an "Early American" feel.

I can almost hear the fifes and drums sounding "Yankee Doodle" (but maybe that is just Sheila playing her recorder!)

I'm going to need to order a Walnut Mini to complete this "sized set"... oh Sheeeeeeei-laaaaaaaaaa.....

Now, I know I promised the Spindlers pics of the other spindles that have shown up on my doorstep in recent weeks, and here they are!

I predict the long weekend will be spent spindling! Will yours?

In Other Shopping News...

I purchased some very cool clay-dyed, organic hemp/cotton t-shirts from Sahalie (formerly Early Winters - excellent customer service, BTW) and I am very pleased with them! The fabric is soft, the colors lovely, and they don't fit like men's tees. These have a nice scoop neck and feminine line to them. Apparently, hemp will hold up for a long time, too. I think you'll like 'em!

Happy 4th Of July!

I've got our 13-star American flag and USA windsock flying in the breeze, and little American flags stuck in the ground along the split-rail fence... I just have to stick the stars and stripes window clings up, and I'm all set! (We need window clings so the silly birds stay away from the windows, so I liven things up a bit and change the goofy things according to the holidays.) Will you be decorating for July 4th?

I wish all of my fellow Americans a proud and patriotic Independence Day! May you have a lovely weekend with your family and friends!

Here at Meadowview, we will be giving thanks for our many freedoms and liberties, watching a DVD of the musical "1776", listening to the "John Adams" audiobook while I spin or knit, and enjoying brats on the grill and some beer! As founding father Benjamin Franklin once said, "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy!"

But please don't drink and do fireworks!

The Spider and the Fly
By Mary Howitt

"Will you walk into my parlour?" said the Spider to the Fly,
"'Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy;
The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,
And I have many curious things to show you when you are there."
"Oh no, no," said the Fly, "to ask me is in vain;
For who goes up your winding stair can ne'er come down again."

"I'm sure you must be weary, dear, with soaring up so high;
Will you rest upon my little bed?" said the Spider to the Fly.
"There are pretty curtains drawn around, the sheets are fine and thin;
And if you like to rest awhile, I'll snugly tuck you in!"
"Oh no, no," said the little Fly, "for I've often heard it said
They never, never wake again, who sleep upon your bed!"

Said the cunning Spider to the Fly, "Dear friend, what can I do
To prove that warm affection I've always felt for you?
I have within my pantry, good store of all that's nice;
I'm sure you're very welcome - will you please take a slice?"
"Oh no, no," said the little Fly, "kind sir, that cannot be,
I've heard what's in your pantry, and I do not wish to see!"

"Sweet creature," said the Spider, "you're witty and you're wise;
How handsome are your gauzy wings, how brilliant are your eyes!
I have a little looking-glass upon my parlour shelf;
If you step in one moment, dear, you shall behold yourself."
"I thank you, gentle sir," she said, "for what you're pleased to say;
And bidding good morning now, I'll call another day."

The Spider turned him round about, and went into his den,
For well he knew the silly Fly would soon come back again;
So he wove a subtle web in a little corner sly,
And set his table ready to dine upon the Fly.
Then he came out to his door again, and merrily did sing,
"Come hither, hither, pretty Fly, with the pearl and silver wing;
Your robes are green and purple, there's a crest upon your head;
Your eyes are like the diamond bright, but mine are as dull as lead."

Alas, alas! how very soon this silly little Fly,
Hearing his wily, flattering words, came slowly flitting by;
With buzzing wings she hung aloft, Then near and nearer drew, -
Thinking only of her brilliant eyes, and green and purple hue;
Thinking only of her crested head - poor foolish thing! At last,
Up jumped the cunning Spider, and fiercely held her fast.
He dragged her up his winding stair, into his dismal den
Within his little parlour - but she ne'er came out again!

And now, dear little children, who may this story read,
To idle, silly, flattering words, I pray you ne'er heed;
Unto an evil counsellor close heart, and ear, and eye,
And take a lesson from this tale of the Spider and the Fly.
